Traffic bans for trucks in 2020

In 2020, there will again be various truck bans in Europe. In this article we list the largest traffic bans. First we name the general traffic bans and then you see all traffic bans in Europe per month. Put them in your agenda and keep following us, so you won't miss one!

General traffic bans in Europe

General traffic bans apply in a number of European countries. We list them below.

General traffic bans in Austria

In Austria a traffic ban applies on all roads on Saturdays between 15:00 and 00:00 and on Sundays and national holidays between 00:00 and 22:00. This prohibition applies to vehicles exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight and for road trains exceeding 3.5 t gross vehicle weight. In addition, there is a traffic ban on all roads at night between 22:00 and 05:00 for vehicles exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight.

General traffic bans in Belarus

From the end of May to the end of August there is a daily traffic ban between 11:00 and 21:00 for vehicles with an axle load exceeding 6 t per single axle. These vehicles may drive between 09:00 and 11:00. This prohibition applies to all highways where the temperature is higher than 25 °C.

General traffic bans in the Czech Republic

In the Czech Republic you are not allowed to drive on main roads and motorways on Sundays between 13:00 and 22:00 with a vehicle exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight. Between July 1 and August 31 this prohibition also applies on Friday (17:00-21:00) and Saturday (07:00-13:00).

From Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00 there is a traffic ban in France. You are then not allowed to drive a vehicle exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight.

General traffic bans in Germany

Every Sunday there is a traffic ban in Germany. From 00:00-22:00 it is then forbidden to drive a vehicle with a gross vehicle weight exceeding 7.5 t or to drive a road train. From July 1 to August 31 this prohibition also applies on Saturdays from 07:00 to 20:00 on certain routes. Click here to see on which routes the summer traffic ban applies.

General traffic bans in Hungary

From Saturday 22:00 to Sunday 22:00 you are not allowed to drive with a vehicle exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight in Hungary. In the winter, from November 4 to March 1, this traffic ban does not apply to vehicles with a Euro 3 motor class.

General traffic bans in Italy

In Italy you are not allowed to drive on Saturdays in a vehicle exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight. In July, August and September this prohibition applies from 7:00 to 22:00. In the other months from 09:00 to 22:00.

General traffic bans in Liechtenstein

For vehicles exceeding 3.5 t gross vehicle weight and for road trains exceeding 5 t gross vehicle weight, a traffic ban applies to all roads every Sunday.

For the same vehicles, it is forbidden to drive on all roads at night between 22:00 and 05:00.

General traffic bans in Luxembourg

There are two general traffic bans in Luxembourg. The first applies to vehicles exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight driving towards France. These vehicles may not drive on all roads from Saturday 10:30 to Sunday 21:45.

The second prohibition applies to vehicles exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight traveling to Germany. They are not allowed to drive on all roads from 11:30 on Saturdays to 21:45 on Sundays.

General traffic bans in Slovakia

On Sundays from 00:00 to 22:00 a traffic ban applies for vehicles exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight and for road trains exceeding 3.5 t gross vehicle weight on motorways, main roads and international routes.

From July 1 to August 31 this same prohibition applies between 07:00 and 19:00.

General traffic bans in Slovenia

On Sundays, there is a traffic ban in Slovenia for vehicles and road trains exceeding 7.5 t gross vehicle weight. This prohibition applies between 08:00 and 21:00 on certain roads. Here you can read on which roads this traffic ban in Slovenia is valid.

General traffic bans in Switzerland

Every Sunday between 00:00 and 24:00 it is forbidden to drive in Switzerland with vehicles exceeding 3.5 t gross vehicle weight and for road trains exceeding 5 t gross vehicle weight.

For these vehicles a traffic ban also applies every night between 22:00 and 05:00.

Traffic bans in April 2020

On 10, 12 and 13 April 2020 there is a traffic ban for trucks in most European countries. Friday 10 April is Good Friday, on 12 and 13 April its first and second Easter Day. The traffic ban applies in the following countries:

Friday, April 10

Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Note: in Andorra and Italy you are not allowed to drive your truck on Saturdays between Good Friday and Easter Monday, on Saturday 11 April. In Italy this traffic ban applies from 09:00 to 16:00.

Sunday, April 12

Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Italy (09:00 – 16:00), Liechtenstein, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, San Marino, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Monday, April 13

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Italy (09:00 - 22:00), Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Poland, San Marino, Slovakia, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Italy sticks to it for another day. On Tuesday, April 14, you are not allowed to drive your truck in Italy from 09:00 to 14:00.

Sunday April 19 and Monday April 20

Orthodox Easter is celebrated in a number of countries. These holidays fall on Sunday 19 and Monday 20 April. Countries that celebrate the Orthodox Easter are: Belarus, Bulgaria, Greece, Montenegro, Northern Macedonia, Romania, Russia, Serbia and Ukraine.

Monday, April 27

Monday 27 April is King's Day in the Netherlands, a national holiday. For this day there is also a traffic ban for trucks in the Netherlands.

Traffic bans in May 2020

Friday May 1st

May 1: Labour Day. In many countries this is a national holiday and therefore in many countries there is also a traffic ban on this day. On 1 May you cannot drive your truck in:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Montenegro, the Netherlands, Northern Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Ukraine.

Thursday, May 21

On Thursday, May 21, 2020 it is Ascension Day. A traffic ban applies to a number of countries:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland.

Sunday, May 31

Pentecost follows after Ascension Day. Sunday May 31 is Easter Sunday and you are not allowed to drive your truck in:

Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Hungary, Liechtenstein, the Netherlands, Norway, Slovenia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Traffic bans in June 2020

Monday, June 1

The traffic ban in a number of European countries also applies on Easter Monday.

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Romania and Switzerland and Ukraine.

Thursday, June 11

On Thursday, June 11 2020, it is Corpus Christi, a Catholic holiday. This is celebrated in:

Austria, Croatia, Germany, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Poland, Portugal, San Marino and Switzerland. No freight traffic is allowed in these countries on Thursday 11 June.

Traffic bans in August 2020

Saturday, August 15

On Saturday August 15 it is Assumption Day. Therefore, no freight traffic may drive in:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain, and Switzerland.

Traffic bans in October 2020

Saturday, October 31

They have various reasons, but in all four of these countries you cannot drive your truck on Saturday 31 October 2020:

Finland, Germany, Slovenia and Sweden.

Traffic bans in November 2020

Sunday, November 1

Sunday November 1 is All Saints’ Day, and therefore freight traffic is prohibited on this day in:

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Croatia, France, Germany, Hungary, Italy, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Monaco, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, Spain and Switzerland.

Wednesday, November 11

On Wednesday 11 November it is Armistice Day in France and Belgium. No trucks are allowed on this day in both countries.

Poland is celebrating Independence Day on this day. Also there trucks are not allowed to drive on 11 November 2020.

Traffic bans in December 2020

Tuesday, December 8

On Tuesday December 8, various countries commemorate the immaculate conception. This means that freight traffic is prohibited on December 8 in:

Andorra, Austria, Italy, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Portugal, San Marino, Spain and Switzerland.

Of course there are traffic bans at Christmas. This is probably not a problem because you will celebrate Christmas at home with your family, but to be sure we call them anyway!

Thursday, December 24

Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, Lithuania, Norway, San Marino, Slovakia and Sweden.

Friday, December 25

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

Saturday, December 26

On Saturday 26 December it is Boxing Day in some countries. Other countries celebrate Saint Stephen’s day that day. Both days are reason for a traffic ban in:

Andorra, Austria, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, San Marino, Slovenia, Slovakia, Sweden and Switzerland.

Thursday, December 31

Finally, we celebrate New Year's Eve. On this day, December 31, you cannot drive your truck in:

Denmark, Finland, Latvia, the Netherlands, Norway, San Marino and Sweden.
